The Elephant Cave is the only place in Greece where bones of a unique species of elephant were discovered! It is a beautiful underwater cave in the Cape Drapano of Chania.
The Elephant Cave with the underwater entrance is located north of the Red Village, about 30 kilometers from the city of Chania. Its existence was not known until 1999, when a fisherman saw its entrance below the surface of the sea, with a length of about 10 meters and a height of about 6.5 meters.
Its exploration took place in 2000 and important findings of paleontological interest have been revealed, such as elephant bones, higher than the contemporary elephants, and two species of deer.
The access to the Elephant Cave is only possible by boat and the entrance to the main hall is realized after swimming 40 meters through an underwater tunnel.Often diving trips are organized to the cave and the divers can admire its impressive natural decor with reddish and white stalagmites and stalactites, both underwater and on the surface.Today, the Elephant Cave is a shelter of the Mediterranean seal Monachus -Monachus, which is the rarest seal species in the world and one of the six most endangered species on our planet.
